BCIT Design Process Module

BCIT DESIGN PROCESS MODULE

In August 2019 BCIT approached me and asked me to design and teach a new course module for their Technical Web Design Program. This was the same program I had graduated from 6 years prior. Over the years I had participated in the program in a small capacity, running mockup interviews for new grads, participating in round table questioning by new grads and giving a short one-off lecture on personal branding. I was ecstatic at the opportunity of getting to participate with BCIT in a more substantial way.

This post is going to give a breakdown of the course I created based on my years of experience as a designer and web developer.

COURSE OVERVIEW

Below is a snapshot of all the course materials I developed for my 5 day module. Each class was 6 hours long running from 9:30 am – 4 pm once a week over a 5 week period.  I picked Brush with Bamboo to be our fake client for this project. All the students were given the same guidelines but tasked with coming up with their own unique redesign of the website. The images in this blog post are the assets I created for my demos, but I was very impressed by how creative some of the students were able to get with their redesigns.

DESIGN PROCESS

This is a slide I referred to multiple times throughout the module. It’s an outline for the Design Process that I taught to the class. It’s the same process you’ve seen in my work with my other clients but expanded and more detailed for the student’s use.

WEB ASSETS

The Web Assets step included showing the student how to export assets from photoshop into .jpg and .png so they could be handed off to a developer and plugged into a website. When I’m not the person developing the site I’ve designed I also include a step where I create a concept board of the final design and leave functionality and design notes for the developer. The image below shows the functionality concept board.

WEBSITE

The final set for the module was to create the web ready assets. The module’s focus was to teach the basics of web design. The students had many other classes teaching them the basics of web development. We didn’t code out our final designs, but below is a mockup of what the final website might have looked like.

After teaching two intakes at BCIT, my workload with my other business partnerships shifted. With the new responsibilities, I was unable to continue teaching after March 2020. While my time with BCIT was short, it was an overall wonderful experience. It gave me a new perspective on teaching and the education system as a whole and has inspired me in more ways than I could have imagined.
